What Is a Stair Nosing?
A stair nosing is the leading edge of a stair tread — the front 25–50mm that receives the most wear and poses the greatest slip hazard. On grating stair treads, the nosing is typically a separate anti-slip component: a checkered steel plate, an abrasive-embedded aluminium extrusion, or a welded round bar cluster.
For steel bar grating treads, the grating bearing bars must run perpendicular to the nosing (NAAMM MBG 531 requirement), ensuring the bars provide structural support across the tread depth.
Anti-Slip Nosing Options
Round bars (⌀12–16mm) welded along the tread front edge. Simple, robust, weldable to the frame. Most common for industrial use.
50–75mm wide checkered plate welded to the frame front face. Provides a solid leading edge and retains fine aggregate as abrasive.
Carborundum-filled grooves in an aluminium extrusion bolted to the front edge. High visibility (yellow/black optional), removable for replacement.
