Steel Grating Weight Calculator

Calculate the weight of any steel bar grating specification — per m², per panel, and total order weight. Supports carbon steel, stainless 304/316, and aluminum. Bearing bar and cross bar independently calculated.

Formula Reference

Bearing Bar (kg/m²):

W_bb = H × T × ρ / P_bb

Cross Bar — Round (kg/m²):

W_xb = π/4 × d² × ρ / P_xb

Cross Bar — Twisted Square:

W_xb = d² × ρ / P_xb

Total weight:

W = W_bb + W_xb (kg/m²)

H, T, d in mm; P in mm; ρ in g/cm³ = kg/dm³. Convert: W_bb = (H/1000 × T/1000 × ρ × 1000) / (P_bb/1000) = H × T × ρ / P_bb.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is steel grating weight calculated?
Weight per m² = (Bearing bar height × thickness × density ÷ bearing bar pitch) + (cross bar area × density ÷ cross bar pitch). Carbon steel density is 7.85 g/cm³, stainless 304 is 7.93, and aluminum is 2.70.
What does 25×5mm bearing bar at 30mm pitch weigh per m²?
Approximately 37.1 kg/m² with 6mm round cross bars at 50mm pitch (carbon steel). The bearing bars contribute about 32.7 kg/m² and cross bars about 4.4 kg/m².
Does hot-dip galvanizing add weight?
Yes — hot-dip galvanizing adds approximately 4% to the steel weight, per ISO 1461. Enable the 'Galvanized weight estimate' toggle to see this automatically.
How much lighter is aluminum grating vs carbon steel?
About 66% lighter. Aluminum density is 2.70 g/cm³ vs 7.85 g/cm³ for carbon steel. A panel weighing 50 kg in steel would weigh roughly 17 kg in aluminum.
How accurate is this calculator?
±2–3% of published NAAMM MBG 531 weight tables. Small differences arise from cross bar end protrusions, edge binding, and manufacturing tolerances not included in the formula.
