Trench Covers & Drain Grates

Steel bar grating panels and frames for spanning drainage trenches and sumps. Available in foot-traffic to heavy-vehicle load ratings, plain or galvanized finish.

Check span capacity for your trench width

Use the load capacity calculator to verify bearing bar depth vs span and load class.

Load Class Selection

ApplicationBS 4592 ClassTypical Bearing Bar
Pedestrian foot traffic only Class A–B 25×5mm @ 30mm
Light vehicles, forklifts up to 2.5t Class B–C 30×5mm @ 30mm
Cars and light trucks up to 5t Class C–D 40×5mm @ 30mm
Heavy trucks, HGVs up to 12.5t Class D–E 50×6mm @ 22mm
Heavy industry, axle loads > 20t Heavy Duty 65×6mm @ 22mm or custom

Span and bearing bar selection must be verified for specific trench widths. Use the load calculator or consult a structural engineer for safety-critical applications.

Standard Components

  • Grating panel — plain or serrated steel bar grating cut to trench width
  • Channel frame — angle iron (L50×50×5) or U-bar recess frame, cast into concrete surround
  • Locking brackets — anti-tilt or anti-theft bolt-down options
  • Lifting handles — flush T-bar or ring handle for maintenance access
  • Surface finish — black mill / hot-dip galvanized (most common) / stainless

Typical Applications

  • Industrial plant drainage channels
  • Car park surface drains
  • Loading dock sumps
  • Chemical plant bund drains
  • Road and highway drainage
  • Airport apron drains
  • Food processing floor channels
  • Swimming pool gutters

Order Information

Provide trench width, cover length (per run), required load class, surface finish, and whether locking is required. Factories supply complete sets (panels + frames) or panels only. MOQ typically 5 tonnes for standard specs; custom sizes as low as 1 tonne.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a trench cover grating?

A trench cover (drain grating) is a steel grating panel that spans a drainage channel or trench, supporting foot and vehicle traffic while allowing water and debris to drain through. The grating sits in a channel frame (angle iron or U-bar) that is embedded in the concrete surround.

What load class do I need for vehicle traffic?

For foot traffic only: BS 4592 Class A–B or NAAMM equivalent. For light vehicles (forklifts, cars): Class C–D (approximately 15–25 kN concentrated load). For heavy vehicles (trucks, HGVs): Class E or heavy-duty custom specification. Always confirm with a structural engineer for safety-critical applications.

What is the maximum single panel size for trench covers?

Standard single panels up to 1000×1000mm are common. For longer spans (1200×1000 mm or wider), intermediate support frames or composite construction may be required. Heavy-duty trench covers with 50×6mm or 65×6mm bearing bars can span up to 2000mm.

Can trench covers be locked in place?

Yes. Anti-theft locking systems (bolt-down brackets, padlock eyes) are available as standard factory options. Lifting keys and flush-mounted handles can also be added for easy maintenance access while preventing accidental displacement.
