FAQs

What grating specification is standard for offshore oil & gas platforms?

The most common offshore spec is 25×5mm serrated bearing bars at 30mm c/c pitch, 6mm round cross bar at 50mm pitch, hot-dip galvanized to ISO 1461. This meets NORSOK M-001 and most major operator standards. IP ratings and coating inspection certificates are typically required.

Why must offshore grating be serrated?

Sea spray, condensation, and hydrocarbon liquids create consistently wet surfaces on offshore structures. Serrated grating reduces slip risk on wet decks. Most operator HSE requirements mandate serrated grating on all offshore walkways and working platforms.

Can epoxy-coated grating replace hot-dip galvanized offshore?

Not typically. Hot-dip galvanizing provides a metallurgically bonded coating that resists impact damage and undercutting corrosion better than paint systems. For highly corrosive tropical offshore environments, some operators specify both galvanizing plus a topcoat of epoxy or polyurethane.

What documentation is required for offshore grating?

Typically: mill certificates (material grade), galvanizing certificate (coating weight), dimensional inspection certificate, and sometimes third-party verification (BV, DNV, LR, or SGS). Specify documentation requirements in your inquiry.
