Hygienic Design Requirements
- Serrated top surface — mandatory for wet, sloped, or fatty surfaces (slip prevention per local food safety regulations)
- Full-penetration welds — no trapped pockets or crevices at cross-bar junctions where bacteria can accumulate
- Pickling and passivation — welds passivated post-fabrication to restore corrosion resistance; specify in order
- Electropolishing option — reduces surface roughness Ra to <0.8 μm for highest-hygiene zones; extra cost
- No carbon steel contamination — SS grating must not contact carbon steel tools, fixtures, or be processed on shared fabrication tables without full passivation

FAQs
What grade of stainless is required for food processing grating?
SS 304 (18/8) is acceptable for most food areas where the primary concern is water and organic material contact. SS 316L (with molybdenum) is required for applications involving salt brines, chlorinated sanitisers (CIP chemicals), or acidic marinades, as it resists chloride-induced pitting corrosion better than 304.
What surface finish does food grating require?
Most food safety standards (FDA, EU 1935/2004, HACCP) require smooth, non-porous surfaces. Bar grating top surfaces are inherently open so cannot be 'smooth', but the metal itself must be free of crevices where bacteria can harbour. 2B or electropolished stainless grating is typically specified. Welds must be fully penetrated and free of trapped pockets.
Can hot-dip galvanized grating be used in food plants?
Not in direct food contact or high-humidity wet processing areas — zinc can leach into food products. Galvanized grating is acceptable in non-contact areas (corridors, loading docks, roof access) but not in the processing zones themselves.
What is the maximum opening size for food plant floor grating?
FDA guidance and many plant HACCP plans limit floor openings to dimensions that prevent tool or small-part fallthrough. Typically 25mm max in the least dimension — standard 30mm pitch grating with 5mm thick bars produces a 25mm clear opening, which is compliant.
